Doctor Who Season 6 Preview

The Doctor Who panel at San Francisco's WonderCon kicked off to much fanfare (and free t-shirts) Sunday morning, the crowd cheering in excitement about the upcoming season of the BBC mainstay. After reshowing the totally badass trailer that debuted late last week, moderator Chris Hardwick introduced the panel: director Toby Haynes, actor Mark Shepard, and writer Neil Gaiman

The panel introduced a two minute behind-the-scenes segment that showed some of the footage for the coming episodes set in America, featuring a John Wayne-like Doctor. "I wear Stetsons now. Stetsons are cool." The footage looked great, and it was combined with the usual "biggest threat ever faced" claims. However, if there is one thing that Doctor Who has always delivered on, it's the promises of getting bigger and better. Haynes said they had big plans for The Doctor in the US, and that it would be a two-part episode. Though they only actually shot in the Utah desert, The Doctor (Matt Smith), Amy (Karen Gillan), and Rory (Arthur Darvill) will be traversing America from New York to Chicago and beyond.
Judging from what we've seen in the teaser and the various clips shown at the panel, Sheppard's character -- Canton Everett Delaware III -- plays a key role in the episodes based in America. They showed a great scene between the always monstrous President Nixon (Stuart Milligan) and Delaware, who seems to be a retired Federal Agent picked by the President to carry out an insidious mission. "You were my second choice for this, Mr. Delaware." Nixon tells him. "That's okay. You were my second choice for President, Mr. Nixon." So good!

The panel went on to talk about how they each got involved and all of the answers were the same: they were fans since childhood and when they were asked to do the show, it was a no-brainer to say yes. Gaiman talked a little bit about the episode he wrote, called "The Doctor's Wife," which was actually meant to be shown last season (instead of "The Lodger") but was cut due to budget constraints. Gaiman said that it's the fourth episode of season 6, and it sheds some light on the long gestating relationship between The Doctor and River Song. He said he was happy to move the episode, as he got to rewrite some scenes between Amy and Rory (Rory was "dead" at the time the episode would have originally aired), and cited why the chemistry of the characters works so well. He also teased that there may be an appearance by an "old acquaintance with a new face."

One of the most intriguing moments of the Season 6 preview stemmed from a fan's question. The fan asked why we see David Tennant's (the previous and 10th Doctor) TARDIS in the trailer for the upcoming episodes. The panel reacted with a very telling "no comment." Haynes assured the fan that he didn't direct that episode, so he honestly had no idea. Could there perhaps be a correlation between the 10th Doctor and the "old acquaintance" that Gaiman had mentioned? Unlikely, but it's a juicy tidbit all the same.

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has revealed more details of the cliffhanger ending to the first half of the next series.

It was previously announced that the show's sixth run will be split in half, starting in spring 2011 and returning in the autumn.

"There will be a huge cliffhanger... that we wouldn't normally do at the end of a series of Doctor Who because it would be too long before it came back," Moffat told Doctor Who Magazine. "[It is] an enormous, game-changing cliffhanger for the Doctor, Amy and Rory. It will change everything for them."

Moffat promised that forthcoming episodes will contain revelations involving the Doctor's friendship with Amy Pond.

He teased: "You will see the Doctor's life change forever, you will gasp in astonishment at the true nature of his relationship with Amy and you will cry out in horror as Rory Williams stumbles to the brink of a tragic mistake."

Doctor Who will return to BBC One this Christmas.

Part 1

Ood Sigma's calling

The Doctor arrives on the Ood Sphere on Christmas Eve and sees that the Ood have progressed further technologically than they should have. Ood Sigma takes the Doctor to the Ood Elders who show him visions of the Master returning. He sees an old woman taking the Master's ring and he realizes that the essence of the Master survived his non-regeneration during their last encounter. The Doctor rushes to Earth in the TARDIS to try and stop his arch-enemy.

Lucy Saxon witness' the Master's revival.

Since her last appearance, Lucy Saxon has been imprisoned. One of the warders is Miss Trefusis, the woman who retrieved the Master's ring. On Christmas Eve night, the prison governor brings Lucy to a chamber where it is revealed that most of the staff are fanatics of the Master who have been working ever since his apparent death to bring about his resurrection. With the help of the ring and a biometric imprint taken from Lucy, the Master reappears in a swirl of energy, but Lucy and some other warders have prepared for this eventuality and Lucy hurls a harmful potion at the Master. The Doctor arrives to find the prison obliterated by the resulting explosion.

The Master's return.

The Master survives the blast, but his life force is left in a state of constant depletion, forcing him to drain the vitality of a number of homeless people on a desolate construction site. Like the Ood and many others on Earth, Wilfred Mott has experienced faded visions of the Master, and has been scouring London with other pensioners, under the group name the "Silver Cloak", to track down the Doctor. Wilf and the Doctor re-unite and the Doctor reveals that a prophecy has been made predicting his death. Later encountering the Master, the Doctor discovers that the drumming in his head is not a symptom of insanity, but perfectly real. A squad of troops suddenly appear, sedating and kidnapping the Master and taking him to the mansion of billionaire Joshua Naismith.

Naismith and his daughter, Abigail, are in possession of the "Immortality Gate", which has restorative powers enabling the healing of injuries and, as Naismith hopes, the resurrection of the dead. Wanting to secure immortality for Abigail, Naismith enlists the assistance of the Master to mend the malfunctioning Gate. Infiltrating the Naismith estate, the Doctor and Wilf discover that two of Naismith's staff are undercover Vinvocci, members of the race which originally owned the Gate, and that its healing abilities can extend to the whole population of any given species across a whole planet. She and her partner are pressured into explaining the Immortality Gate is a device that heals lifeforms across entire planets. The doctor realizes the Master is going to do something to the Human race and goes to stop him. He gets to the immortality gate but is captured.

After the Master breaks through his straight jacket and flies into the gateway then because he has set the gateway to human and he is in the the machine every human on earth then becomes copies of the master with the exception of Wilfred who is shielded in the control room and Donna, who due to the events in Journey's End is half human - half Timelord. However as Donna witnesses her mother and her fiancée turn into clones of the Master she starts to remember everything that was erased from her memory.

As the Master steps out of the gateway he tells the doctor that he has turned the humans into the "Master Race" as he looks round and everyone is the Master. As the Doctor looks round and every Master is laughing at him. As the camera fades to black, the Narrator claims the Master and his removal of humanity is only a small part of an approaching conflict. The Narrator then appears on-screen and it is revealed that he is a Time Lord by way of his robes, and is shown to addressing a large hall of fellow Time Lords and Time Ladies. The Time Lord proclaims that Gallifrey is restored, that the Time Lords have returned, and that this heralds the end of time itself.

The End of Time Part 2 synopsis

The Doctor faces the end of his life as the Master's plans hurtle out of control. With the sound of drums growing louder, and an ancient trap closing around the Earth, the Doctor and Wilf must fight alone. But sacrifices must be made, and the deadly prophecy warns: "He will knock four times."

Just how scary is The Waters of Mars?
“I’m not sure if it’s as scary as Blink, but it’s quite frightening – because it’s so real, I think. I hope so!”

How on Earth do you go about making water scary? And what were the challenges of shooting with that volume of water?
"I hope you think it is [scary] when you see it! It was very, very difficult. We had a difficult time trying to work out how to do the water… can you imagine, the volumes of water that we required, in a studio setting? How d’you get rid of it? If you want to do retakes, how do you get everything dry again?

“The kind of water effect we wanted was sort-of mystical, almost organic – well, it is organic, obviously! – so the difficulty was deciding with the visual FX guys which one out of the effect they were offering us was the right one. They came up with five or six different kinds of pipes, hoses and systems. And eventually there was one that we all said, ‘That’s the one.’ There was a uniform yes to one particular effect, and that was the one we used.

“Now, how do you make it creepy? It seems to be alive, the water, by the way it follows the characters in the story. Sort of – we didn’t make a big thing of it in the story, but that’s how I shot it, so it was chasing people, following them and trapping them. The best effects you can get come out of seeing the enormity of the water, the relentlessness of it. I think where it becomes really creepy and you get the fear, is when it continues draining out of characters’ mouths.

“There was a very complex system of tubes and piping that they all had to wear within the prosthetics – and water was squeezed and pressurized through the tubes to give the volume of water we required to come out of the actors’ mouths on a continuous basis.”

“Waters” is going out in November, when the evenings are darker than during the regular series run. Did you have that in the back of your mind when you were deciding on the tone of the show?
“When I first read the script, it was originally going to be put out on Christmas Day, I think! I was quite worried that this dark, deep story, which is… well, I don’t know that it’s part of a trilogy, but it certainly will lead you into the finalé. You know something horrible’s going to happen after this story, involving the Doctor – but you don’t know what. I thought it was very dark – I mean, really dark, for Christmas. That’s not the reason they changed their minds to put it out in November – I think that was the controller of BBC One, deciding that maybe as we had three more to go, then one could be in the latter part of the year so that there wasn’t such a long gap between when the first special went out and Christmas. But when I knew it was going to go out earlier in the year, I was able to think about it in a much more dark way, rather than trying to keep the Christmas spirit!”

There seem to be some elements of foreshadowing in “Waters” – the stuff about the “four knocks”.
“I have to tell you, I haven’t seen, I haven’t read – in fact, I probably wasn’t allowed – to know how the next episodes, the final two-parter for David, starts and ends. I’ve no idea what it’s about! It’s going to end, obviously, with him regenerating into Matt Smith – but I’ve no idea what happens in it! So I don’t know to what extent the horror is in that two-parter. I knew about and read the previous script, I knew about the four knocks thing, so I understood what was going on, and what had been and what’s coming, and so on – in terms of the, “when four knocks happen, you know he’s going to die,” kind of thing. So I played on that, but I didn’t know quite what that meant and how it was going to happen in the last two episodes – and I still don’t!”

And the Doctor’s scared himself in this episode, which is a pretty unusual situation…
“Yes, but I think – with some exceptions, obviously – most fans of Doctor Who will know and feel sad and be hurt and worried and concerned – and wonder, is this the Doctor we’ve always known and loved, this ancient mariner traveling through the universe and helping people to help themselves, and being good and worthy and whatever, and showing them the way. And here he’s terrified. But I think that’s good, and I think most people will be interested to see how he gets out of this one. That what I think they think every time. But here, he really is in a very fearful state – and doesn’t want to die, obviously. I don’t think he wants to regenerate – I think he feels he’s got more to do, so how that gets resolved… well, I’m going to watch as well.”

Little-known actress Karen Gillan has been unveiled as the next assistant in Doctor Who.

The 21-year-old will star alongside new Time Lord Matt Smith in the new series, to be broadcast next year.

Gillan has already appeared in the drama, having played a Soothsayer in The Fires Of Pompeii in the last run.

"I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. - I just can't wait to get started," she said.

'Incredible actor'

"The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it.

"Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him," she added.

Head of Drama, BBC Wales, Piers Wenger said she brings "energy and excitement" to the role.

"When she auditioned alongside Matt we knew we had something special," he said.

Writer and executive producer Steven Moffat said they saw some "amazing actresses" but Gillan "walked through the door the game was up".

He described her as "funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it".

"A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too," he added.

Gillan, from Inverness, developed a love for acting after attending several youth theatre groups and taking part in various school productions.

At the age of 16, she decided to pursue her career further and left school to study acting at Edinburgh's Telford College.

She went on to secure a place at the Italia Conti drama school in London and landed her first role in the Scottish drama Rebus.

Parts in Channel 4's Stacked, The Kevin Bishop Show and James Nesbitt's forthcoming film Outcast followed, but the role in Doctor Who is her first high profile to date.

Also in the Fires of Pompeii she was one of the soothsayers.....just like Freema Agyeman has a role in series 2 before become the Doctors full time assistant in seeason 3.

Planet of the dead was...brilliant

Here is an article refering to the recent announcement from David Tennant that he willleave after the specials in 2009. This is bad news for most but this means we'll be getting a new Doctor, who will surely be just as good if not better.
David Tennant is to stand down as Doctor Who, after becoming one of the most popular Time Lords in the history of the BBC science fiction show.

Tennant stepped into the Tardis in 2005, and will leave the role after four special episodes are broadcast next year.

He made the announcement after winning the outstanding drama performance prize at the National Television Awards.

"When Doctor Who returns in 2010 it won't be with me," he said. "I don't ever want it to feel like a job, so I want to move on when it still feels exciting and fresh. Now don't make me cry... I love this part, and I love this show so much that if I don't take a deep breath and move on now I never will, and you'll be wheeling me out of the Tardis in my bath chair."

'I'll miss it'

Three years was "about the right time" to play the role, he told the BBC in an exclusive interview. "I think it's better to go when there's a chance that people might miss you, rather than to hang around and outstay your welcome," he said.

His stint in the show had been "the most extraordinary time, it's been bewildering, life changing, very exciting", he said.

"And just so much fun, such a great show to work on. That's one of the reasons I think it's right to take a deep breath and bow out when it's still fun, when it's a novelty. I don't ever want it to feel like a job, so I want to move on when it still feels exciting and fresh and that means I'll miss it."

Russell T Davies, executive producer, said: "I've been lucky and honoured to work with David over the past few years - and it's not over yet, the Tenth Doctor still has five spectacular hours left!

"After which, I might drop an anvil on his head. Or maybe a piano. A radioactive piano. But we're planning the most enormous and spectacular ending, so keep watching."

The latest news about the Children In Need special from the Doctor who site.

This year's Children in Need Telethon is to feature an exclusive preview of the forthcoming Doctor Who Christmas Special.

The clip, from the Christmas Special entitled The Next Doctor, will show the first two minutes of a brand new episode for the Time Lord, played by David Tennant.

This never seen before footage, is a worldwide exclusive, and will keep fans all over the globe wondering what's in store for the Doctor's next adventure.

Starring David Tennant and David Morrissey, the clip from The Next Doctor will be broadcast as part of the BBC Children in Need show on 14 November, BBC One from 7pm.

Children in need Doctor Who special

The actors are getting together for the BBC charity Children in Need in a programme to be broadcast on November 14.

An insider at the BBC said: "It's a pretty ambitious idea and it's still being finalised. Everything is being kept under wraps but Doctor Who fans are in for a big treat."

The first of the 10 actors to take the role was William Hartnell in 1963, followed three years later by Patrick Troughton and then by Jon Pertwee but all three have since died.

The seven survivors include Tom Baker, now best known as the voice of the comedy series Little Britain, who played the role for seven years from 1974.

He was followed by Peter Davidson from 1981 to 1984, whose daughter Georgia Moffett has also featured in the programme and who is now dating the current doctor, David Tennant.

The others are Colin Baker, from 1984 to 1986, Sylvester McCoy who had two stints from 1987 to 1989 and re-appeared in the role in 1996, Paul McGann, who took over the role in 1996 and Christopher Eccleston who reprised the series in 2005.

The current doctor, Tennant, is set to go head-to-head with his sidekick Catherine Tate at this year's National Television Awards.

Both stars have been nominated for Outstanding Drama Performance for their roles as the Timelord and his assistant Donna Noble in the BBC sci-fi drama.

Tennant, who has not yet decided whether to return in a fifth series of Doctor Who, has previously won two National Television Awards.

This year will be the first time male and female stars have been pitted against each other in the acting category

Schedule:

Filming has wrapped for the 2008 Christmas special. Filming for the 2009 specials will commence in January 2009, with the filming for series 5 starting later that year.

(DT is in Hamlet and Love's Labour's Lost in Stratford Upon Avon until November 2008, and the London run of Hamlet until 10th January 2009. He will then start filming in Cardiff on 11th January) - info from the-writer99, update by Stuartwho)

Note on the specials: these were NOT put in place to allow DT to play Hamlet. RTD, in "The Writer's Tale" (quoted in The Times) mentions promising to DT and the production team after Doomsday was filmed (i.e. late 2005) that they would have a big finish to series 4 followed by a break to allow a new production team to prepare for series 5. DT was only approached for the role of Hamlet after his appearance in the "Who Do You Think You Are" of 27th Sept 2006. (The Metro, 21 Jul 2008)

C=O reports (here, here and here) that work has begun (as of 2nd Aug'08) on the 2009 Christmas Special, with everything presumably in place already for the Easter Special. It is suggested that the 2009 Christmas special will be standalone, followed by a two-parter.

DWM #400 has further information - RTD (production notes) says "we've already cast two huge parts, which had us all skipping with glee". RTD also says, "even though pre-production won't officially start for a while, the writing has started, and we're already having detailed conversations with the design department, so you could say that work has begun......"

Elsewhere in DWM #400 it is said that pre-production starts in November with shooting starting mid-January

Format

It is confirmed (RTD, DWM #378; Steven Moffat interview 24 Jul) that there are, in total, five specials to appear between the end of series 4 and the start of Steven Moffat's reign.
There is a Christmas Special for 2008 (already filmed).
In 2009 one special is scheduled for Easter and another will broadcast on Christmas 2009 - the others are unscheduled to date (Julie Gardner in the Telegraph)

The latest news from The Co=Ordinator is that the three remaining specials are to be scheduled over Christmas, with two close together (so either 25th, 26th, 1st Jan OR 25th, 31st, 1st Jan). The Easter special is likely to be 60 minutes long, the Christmas ones 50 minutes. Ian Levine has also heard this. (Rich Flair says it's a two-parter over Christmas).

Locations and sets

Emperor Fabulous reported in July '08 that one of the Specials may be taking place partially or entirely in a location outside the UK.

The News of the World (Aug '08) reports that two specials will be filmed in America, supposedly to raise DW's profile stateside. The specials will apparently also feature a "big-name" American female assistant.

US poster TonieGaylin told us that some scouting has been done by her sister-in-law for locations for Harry Potter and other British production crews.
SyFy Portal Syfy Portal say they had already been following leads on DW filming in the US and suggest the main motivator is financial (the strong pound is making filming cheaper in the US - they also mention potential Harry Potter filming in the US).

Emperor Fabulous has since confirmed that his source also suggests filming abroad involving at least the Second Unit and going West rather than East (and possibly moves to show DW sooner after UK broadcast in the US).

Eddie reports that as far as he knows the console room is getting a bit of a makeover for the specials, and the console is being rebuilt. "Not changed, but just refreshed. I was also privvy to a conversation about the possibility of "green screening" sections of it to give the illusion of extra rooms and doors off it."

Casting

Confirmation that casting has been done on at least one 2009 special: Diana Chire has been cast as "Allegra" in a 2009 production of DW, directed by Graeme Harper

* Agynes Deyn is reported as being in one of the specials. Also here and here. However The Raven reports that Agynes herself "knows nothing about it and doesn't know what they're talking about".
* Rumour (foaf) on IMDB that Bad Girls star Alicia Eyo has been offered a companion role for one of the specials; a role that may play into full-time companion for series 5 (IMDB link; heads up from CTFan)
* John Simm as The Master - see "Return of the Master" section
* Georgia Moffet (Jenny, aka the Doctor's Daughter) is reported to have confirmed her return in a special (revengebeast; The Sun). Note mondas_alive's post quoting a script for the 2009 specials:
Young Teen: Doctor! Where are you going? (Hears the cries of the Doctors Daughter). That said, Georgia was tight-lipped (but hesitant?) at "Bad Wolf"(sk8erboy2000; rhysm;). Further confirmed by (72lf)
Regarding Jenny returning in the specials, RTD says ""I've no plans. But who knows what Steven might do?" (DWM #400)
* Jennifer Saunders is reported to be cast in a special, playing the Tenth Doctor after a body-swap (72lf, info from specials treatment document). Rumour also heard by Urza
72lf says that his source still stands by this but the source has heard nothing new on it, and believes it might happen for Easter.
* Albert Finney is reported to be one of the two big names (mentioned by RTD, DWM #400) cast for the 2009 specials (Blogtor Who confirmed by 72lf) and Lee Mansfield
* Patrick Stewart as the Meddling Monk - see "Patrick Stewart" section
* Nick Frost has been approached to play an "unconventional companion" in a special (Eddie here and here; confirmed as being considered by Lee Mansfield -Sadly, this will not happen due to Nick Frost having other filming commitments (Eddie)

Settings, Plots, Heroes and Villains

RTD on the Specials "They're all very different. They're all very colourful. They hit the ground running. [...] There are at least two alien planets, maybe more.
[choosing words carefully] I would say...how can I put this? Two new monsters...no, three! Yes, three.
The Doctor is travelling alone. Each story will have a different companion [...] some great guest casting...and it won't always be a young girl." (DWM #400)

Characters and storylines from series 4 will not necessarily be picked up for the specials (Julie Gardner, Telegraph)

* Winston Churchill (for specials or series 5) - reputedly TV people asked for his removal from "Revenge of the Judoon" so he could be kept in reserve. (Times Online courtesy Cameron K. McEwan; and hence to the Sun)
Blogtor Who says that sources suggest Albert Finney (see CASTING section) will play Winston Churchill, a role he played on TV's The Gathering Storm. Confirmation of Winston - Lee Mansfield
* Sea Devils. "The return of The Sea Devils is definitely planned and all preliminary work has long since been concluded." The Co=Ordinator; C=O again.
Lee Mansfield confirms Sea Devils: "Top quality moving mouthed, blinky moving eyed, NETTING clad Sea Devils", backed up by "CGI Myrka". But he can't confirm if they will be in the Churchill episode "fighting on the beaches" (Lee)
* Doctor Who books to be published in 2009 include "Prisoner of the Daleks", "The Slitheen Excursion" and "Judgement of the Judoon" (thanks Doodle). So chances are none of these will feature in the specials.
* Donna (Catherine Tate) and Wilf (Bernard Cribbins) over the last three specials, together with the Master (The Co=Ordinator). Also heard (via DW Yahoo group) by SpacecatX, and (via source) by 72lf. CT says in DWM #399 that she would have done another series if she had been asked and regarding a return "anything is possible". This rumour has also made The Sun (8 Sept'08).
* bump1980 reports that a friend (recently in a show at the Edinburgh festival) was auditioned for a special. The part was of a humanoid alien who can suck people's emotions/thoughts out of their heads.
* In DWM #400, RTD says that there will be "two or three" alien worlds in the specials.
* In the series 4 boxset commentaries, DT requests that the written (but not filmed) 'Shadow Proclamation' scene in The Stolen Earth, featuring monsters from throughout the series, appear in one of the specials (Den Of Geek)

Return of McGann
Original rumour from WhoKnew (scroll on in thread for more) that PM was to return in the second 2009 special, in an episode directed by Graham Harper. This rumour has also been heard by 72lf, but (sheringham's) sources said it wasn't happening.

The Doctor's Trainers then posted that the PM episode was being cast. Later The Doctor's Trainers posted that sources say McGann is due some filming in eight weeks time (so early November '08), apparently the Eighth Doctor will have shorn hair, looked battered and his last scene involves a stand-up regeneration. TDT added that it looks like Euros Lynn will be directing.

The story above got picked up by The Sun (11 Sept'08).

TDT reports that the scenes in which PM will appear are set "right at the end of the Time War". TDT adds that he has a second source confirming this information.
72lf (also here) said his source confirmed this, EXCEPT for PM returning - unless it's a secret of the highest order, we will see "glimpses of the Time war, but if an eight Doctor is seen , it will be from behind standing up."

TDT also says that there MAY (click here for big pinch of salt) be attempts to bring back Eccleston

TDT confirms explicitly that PM is in a historical episode (of DW NOT TW) where the hordes of Ghengis Khan try to get through the doors of McGann's TARDIS, and an elephant tries to sit on it. The McGann console has been rebuilt, with the rest to be filmed greenscreen. (See original hints here and here). Also a hint (noticed by jedimasterguff and replied to by TDT) of "robot Ghengis Khan soldiers"

Lee Mansfield is 100% convinced that PM will not return, 72lf's source agrees. Eddie was told by "BBC Press Office, Taylor Herring (who handle the publicity for Dr Who), Paul McGann's agents, a very high ranking writer on the series, someone very close to Paul and some of the interior writing staff at Upperboat" that there was no truth in the story. Eddie has also spoken to Paul McGann who said he has not been approached, nor booked, nor read a script ((see Eddie's other posts on this here, here and here) plus overview of conversations here). Last from Taylor Herring: '"there is no truth in this story" adding "or Torchwood" but only because I asked' (Eddie)
A spokeswoman for the show told Digital Spy, "There is no truth to the story at all".

72lf's source now (13 Sept'08) saying "I really cant comment on it at this point......its not worth getting fired over...."

Daveydee points out that Paul McGann is tied up from now ("Filming has just begun...") until Christmas filming a new ITV drama, "Collision" (information from ITV)

Mudpusher reports that his area has done no work whatsoever to date on the 2009 specials - as far as he knows, no-one in production will see a script until December'08

The Revolutionist reports (29 Sept), "the rumours I've heard are that Paul McGann will not be returning to reprise the role of the Eighth Doctor."

Latest - one of Eddie's sources is backtracking slightly, saying he doesn't want Eddie to think he was lying IF something does come of this. As of yet Eddie knows of no script including the Eighth Doctor and Paul McGann has not been approached. In associated news The_Iceman2288 points out that the current DWA (#84) is telling the kids who the Eighth Doctor is...
Other than the source above Eddie is still getting nothing on this; neither is Lee Mansfield.
A newly returned TDT reports "McGann has already filmed for Doctor Who a couple of weeks back" - Paul has only a few scenes.

Return of the Master

The Master to return: (The Co=Ordinator). Instead of a cameo in series 4, plans were changed to bring the Master in a much bigger way in the specials (see C=O posts here and here).

TDT reports that the Master will return with an unexpected ally.

* Harriet Jones is not dead (TDT)
* Harriet Jones is in league with the Master (and was at the time of "The Stolen Earth") (TDT)
* Someone else was in the room when Harriet spoke to the Children of Time and it was Harriet that picked up the Master's ring (TDT)
* The above two facts play into the specials along with the Osterhagen key
* Something in the specials fulfils what the Ninth Doctor said about HJ's terms as prime minister heralding a golden age (TDT)

72lf says his source confirms TDT's spoiler.

The Daily Star (30 Sept'08; reported by chrisakadonkey) says that the Master returns in the last 2009 special and battles the Doctor until one dies, resulting in a new Doctor.

Patrick Stewart The Meddling Monk?
Patrick Stewart has reportedly been approached to appear in either the specials or Series 5. (Eddie, Lee Mansfield)
Reportedly there will be no facial prosthetics or heavy make up;there's a "killer" costume; Patrick is keen to play someone who is "not the good guy for a change" (although the character is "not all bad"); it's a significant enough character to be either moved, removed or revived later, depending on his availability; and he's keen to work again with David Tennant and "have the relationship evolve" (Eddie); PS has been officially approached to play a "significant role" in either one of the specials or Series 5. The part is that of a Time Lord (Eddie) Lee Mansfield has heard that the role could be that of the Meddling Monk. Eddie wouldn't contradict that.
Lee Mansfield has since heard on good authority that Patrick Stewart has been asked to play the Monk.
Eddie reports that Patrick Stewart is still very interested; nothing is certain yet and his schedule does not fit in with the filming right now, but he is willing to accommodate if possible (Eddie). If he can't manage it, the character is likely to be dropped from the special and appear in series 5 instead (Eddie) If PS does appear it will be one of the last specials, possibly the last (Eddie)

Story picked up by The Daily Star and the Sun (who combined PS with the potential Dalek two-part opener to series 5). Clarification by Eddie: PS has been approached to play the Meddling Monk in the last of the specials, which will also involve John Simm.

Eddie (with due warnings) also presents a snippet, which depicts the Doctor arriving in a mysterious, ominous, fan-wanky (!) environment, where he encounters a Patrick Stewart-like figure who announces "THIS IS THE GAME OF RASSILON...Welcome home, Doctor..." Lee Mansfield adds that the piece ends with the Doctor asking "What are you playing at, Mortimus!?" eddie himself doesn't know exactly what this is about...

But to curb some speculation the-writer88 reports that she has been lead to believe that right now there are NO plans for the return of Gallifrey or the Time Lords.

Children In Need

Appeal night: 14th November 2008.

Despite rumours to the contrary, there will NOT be a Doctor Who segment for CiN in 2008. RTD: "much to our regret... the schedule was absolutely packed... I thought it best to confirm this now, so people don't start building up expectations." There may be some form of Who involvement though (DWM #399)

Torchwood Magazine (Sept 08) report that, 'Plans are afoot in the Doctor Who and Torchwood production offices for a fantastic one-off event to coincide with this years Children In Need. We're not allowed to tell you what just yet, but we'll have the full details very, very soon'. See also DenOfGeek.com.

DWM #400 report that there will be a "one off event" (so more likely a concert than a mini episode) hosted by Doctor Who to raise money for CiN. More news due next issue.

This event will be "a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go behind the scenes at the studios where the shows are filmed" for fans of Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures; "on Saturday and Sunday, 8 and 9 November, the BBC will be opening the studio doors just outside Cardiff to 100 lucky competition winners and their friends and families". RTD (DWM #398) says that the title is 'a bit of a giveaway'.

72lf (here and here) says a rough cut is complete of this episode (Sept '08), it is loosely based on "The One Doctor" and has a working title of "The Other Doctor" (but this title may be changed before the episode is locked down).

Emails included in RTD's new book A Writers Tale have been printed in "The Times". Spoilery information includes:
RTD's ideas for titles: The Two Doctors, The New Doctor, The Next Doctor.
"The real heart of it is the beginning: the Doctor arrives, hears a damsel in distress, the Doctor steps forward to save her... when this other man [to be played by David Morrissey] swings in, dashing, brilliant, amazing, clever, witty, saves the day. The Doctor says, “Who are you?” The man says, “I'm the Doctor!” [...] The Doctor becomes his companion." "Cybermen, Victoriana, a swordfight on the roof with Cybershades (Cyberman heads in flowing black robes, like wraiths, sort of creepy half-Cybermen), workhouse kids as slaves... That's all the normal plot stuff." "I had a fair bit of Cybermen-in-Victoriana worked out, but this two Doctors story [...] is so strong that it's sort of knocking out everything else [...] a lot of that Cybermen stuff was dark - graveyards and things - whereas this new stuff is fun and lively, it's even going to get knockabout"

Above picked up by MANY papers - but they don't add anything except speculation (which we have plenty of here).

72lf reports that (based on rough cut) - RTD "has gone for a simple adventure approach and nothing that a future production team would have to explain in 10 years time", it's "very funny, well paced", Pirates of the Caribbean to VOTD's Poseidon Adventure. "Morrissey is NOT a future Doctor."

Latest from 72lf, (based on a nearly finished cut of the Christmas special), David Morrissey is NOT a future Doctor. He is a conman. The Doctor believes briefly that DM could be a future version of him, "but as the story unfolds, the truth emerges through a few funny scenes"

From RTD's A Writer's Tale, it seems that the original script carried on directly from Journeys End and featured the cybermen invading the TARDIS (and rearing up behind DT), and DT reacting "What, what, what!". This was shot (and there are pictures in the book of this), but it was then dropped by RTD.

In DWM #400, DT says that the Christmas special "doesn't carry on immediately from the end of Series Four. It was going to in the first draft of the script, but then it was decided the the ending of Episode 13 is so kind of momentous and bleak that actually the Doctor may just need a bit of time out. An undisclosed amount of time has passed..." The episode starts with the Doctor arriving in London, on Christmas Eve, 1851; having quite a nice time...and then things start to go wrong...

A source has seen basic footage of David Morrisey as the "next" doctor, and the Cybermen in all their glory from the Christmas Episode. But they said that the scene they saw involves someone (either our Doctor or the other doctor, I'm not sure which, but one of them) holding up some kind of lightning bolt which destroys the Cybermen in one fell swoop.(Xenutia) - based on set reports it is DM who destroys the Cybermen.

DWM #399 confirms the cast (DK, DM, VT) and that Dervla Kirwan is playing Miss Hartigan.

The cyberwraiths are in fact called cybershades (clashtafari)

The Sun (30 Jul) report an "insider" as saying "The Cybershade is a mutant with some of the looks of the Cybermen — but it is a much darker creation." (Story was picked up by The Telegraph and Teletext)

There is talk of there being a new kind of King/Emperor Cyberman that's a twist on the new design (oldtype40). Also (vaguely) of a report in a tabloid of "cyber dogs" (perhaps relating to the dog-like behaviour of the cybershades, mentioned in the set reports?) (Sontaran Of Brunei)

According to RTD (reported in the Scottish Sunday Express 28 Sept'08), "It’s called The Next Doctor, and there is a major plot twist at the end. We’re even thinking of not having a press screening, because we don’t think anyone will be able to keep it secret. For the first time we have two men together as leads. It’s a small focused idea, a little different.”

The Christmas special contains the phrase "cache of info-stamps" (Poison Sky Commentary; Ron Mace, also Den Of Geek)
There is a character called Aubrey Fairchild (The Stolen Earth commentary; Ron Mace). The character meets a "terrible death" (Den Of Geek).
The Hub set, from spin-off series Torchwood, has been 'trashed' and used for filming in the special (Den Of Geek). Interestingly, filming for the five-parter of Torchwood features a thrashed "Plass" (Planet Gallifrey), so multiple uses for a destroyed Hub seems in order.

Velile Tshabalala interview in West Sussex Today: she is very careful about what she says, but confirms her character is Rosita, that Rosita is "an East Londoner, very Cockney", and that, "The Doctor is faced with another Doctor. Rosita is the assistant to the other Doctor but as the episode goes on she starts helping the Doctor we know." Velile also speaks of how hard it is acting scared when there is nothing there - it sounds like there was a substantial amount of green screen at some point.

This was shown at Comic Con. It shows scenes of Mrs Hartigan in the graveyard; she mentions the Cybermen. We also see an urchin who says it's 1851; lots of explosions and a brief glimpse of a cybershade.

Filming in a Snow-covered grave-yard, featuring a vicar, a woman in red and policemen running from a pyre. Also filmed with cybermen and "cyber-wraith" creatures (feathery cloaks and copper colour cyber masks). The director is Andy Goddard.

Filming in Gloucester took place over four nights and featured DT (brown suit, blue shirt), David Morrissey (Victorian dress), Velile Tshabalala.

In another scene funeral directors with cyber ear pods lead a line of kids away. DT and VT run ahead of the kids and join the line, DT then looks back. After the scene with kids walking in a line, they were rehearsing a scene where a lot of the Victorian people were all running away in the alley (from a considerable explosion) with DM and VT and DM appeared to grab a child as if saving him from something.

Filming outside Monmouth town hall, a snow-covered water-side scene. Various scenes: Twenty or so child actors being marched into big double doors by an undertaker wearing cyber earpieces; being forced past cybermen ("Enter the court of the Cyber-King! That is an order - march!") as the cyber shades herd them like dogs; emerging in panic from the large double doors as VT shouts at them to "keep running"

Big Showdown with David Tennant, David Morrissey, and Dervla Kirwin, in which it comes clear that DK's character, Mrs Hartigan is behind the cybermen's plot. The Doctor is threatened with death, DM throws something at the cybermen, then DM shoots them.
Doctor: "Whoa! That's cheating, sneaking up like that! Have you got your legs on "silent"?
Doctor: "and it all has to happen tomorrow, on Christmas day? That was your idea was it?"
Cybermen: when the Doctor says who he is, say his appearance "does not match the cybermens visual record".

Doctor: "Ah well, wait a minute, let me die happy - tell me what you want the children for" Mrs H: "What does anyone want children for?"

"The Dr then throws something at the cyberman, who catches it at informs the Dr that it is ineffective against the cyber race, at which point David Morrissey steps out from behind the Cybermen and Mrs H and (this was only a rehearsal) mimed shooting them and went "boom, boom" as the Cybermen shook and shivered." Speculation:

Many have speculated this is based on the audio "The One Doctor" - 72lf (here and here) says that, based on "very good, close sources", this episode is indeed based on that audio, that it is a light comedy after the tearjerker of the finale. DM is the fake Doctor, and the Cybershades are fakes made by Morrissey's character, only for the real Cybermen (and the real Doctor) to show up...

72lf is told that the series is "tied up till series 9", with SM having a 5 year contract.

WRITERS:

None besides Steven Moffat announced as yet.

Rough ideas were being put together for series 5 "as we speak" (May 2008, Time_Lord)

SM was writing the first script in July '08 (Comic Con 24 Jul, on withaterrace livejournal). Apparently he started in January! (email from RTD to Benjamin Cook, printed in The Times)

According to an interview in Death Ray (Aug '08) with Steven Moffat (summarised here), SM expects to write 5 or 6 episodes.
However, given RTD never managed to predict how many he would write, that could easily change (he refused to be drawn in a previous interview (SM interview, 24 Jul)

Feeley reports from the Moffat session at the Edinburgh TV Festival (23rd Aug '08)

* SM has completed the first episode of the season, it was "the easy part, as I'd written it in my head many times before."
* SM has a broad overarching plan for the season that he's currently refining.
* He has had emails from would-be DW writers, including some from "a few quite surprising names".
* Gaiman is still on the cards and has been asked to prepare two different ideas. Paul Cornell is likely too...Lee Mansfield And I'll confirm the Gaiman and Cornell thing.Eddie
One of the ideas Gaiman is provisionally working on is the Ice Warrior story (Eddie)

PLOTS/STORYLINES:

"THEY'RE BACK"... apparently. We don't yet know what "They" are (assuming SM wasn't just looking for a strong opening line!) (Steven Moffat, DWM 397)

SM confirms that there will not be a series of "Blink"-type stories, "[Y]ou couldn't have a whole series like that [...] You can't have that as the first episode. It's just too grim. So it's different contemplating it from this position, very, very different." The series will also continue to embrace a wide range of tones and genres, Moffat said. Rather than adapting the show to his particular writing style, he looks forward to experimenting with different voices to maintain the show's variety. SM also looks forward to "get[ting] to write episodes that I wouldn't normally write, that wouldn't be expected of me." (Moffat interview, ScifiWire)

SM has said (Death Ray, Aug '08, summarised here) he thinks the Doctor works best when solving problems rather than fighting armies, that the Doctor has always been a sexy, flirty character, albeit one who doesn't pursue love interests and that any fans hoping for a reduction in comedy, soapy stuff, gay jokes or the sonic screwdriver will be disappointed (and that he did these more than RTD anyway).

Don't despair of returning monsters in the Moff's reign; "Steven talked about the future in terms of... well, to the extent that I said 'Don't tell me any more!' I want to find out as a viewer. I was even surprised, because I was half-expecting there to be a No Old Monsters rule under The Moff. But no. So that felt good." (RTD, A Writers Tale)

"Zygons. Series 5. Apparently." (the-writer88;);

Eddie reports on his blog that Mark Gattis has been asked to adapt his novel "Nightshade" for series 5 (via Lee Mansfield).
Odds On reports having heard this, a few weeks back, but as far as he knows Gattis hasn't said yes yet.

Information (from the series 5 bible):

* Zygons Lee Mansfield and Eddie). According to Lee Mansfield Tennant demands Zygons...he gets Zygons. Lee Mansfield suggests that there may be "Zygon infiltration horror for the Doctor". Plus, apparently "the guys who did Walking With Dinosaurs have been asked to help design and create a CGI Skarasen for Season 5" (Lee Mansfield)
* Ice Warriors.Lee Mansfield All checks out with Eddie. He couldn't possibly deny any of that. Ice Warrior provisional title: The Faces In The Dust (Eddie)
The writer for this episode is provisionally Gaiman (Eddie)
* Daleks (Lee Mansfield). Two-parter Dalek episode to open Series 5 Lee Mansfield
The plan at the moment is that the series is coming back with a two part Dalek story. As far as I know they won't appear in the series again that year. Eddie
Eddie clarifies the situation - IF the Daleks make an appearance in series 5, they will do so in an opening two-parter, probably set in Edwardian Britain. However SM doesn't really want to use the Daleks, and may persuade the BBC to replace them with something new for that adventure.
* The enemy who will reveal themselves in the series denouement will have been in every episode of series 5.Eddie

Story picked up by The Sun (with some confusion over the specials and series 5) mentioning Daleks, Zygons and Ice Warriors.

Note : And in light of all this information, Moffat has delivered his Series 5 plans to people for considerations, feedback, planning etc.... Lee Mansfield (Sept '08) The Moff has presented his preliminary "bible", series 5 stuff is "subject to change but it is the initial outline for the next full series, with a two part opener and a very insidious and, in my opinion, excellent, arc culminating in the finale" (Eddie)

Note: 72lf has been doing some digging and has discovered that Moffat has apparently seen the relevant posts. 72lf's source states that rtd has really done all you can with the daleks and has no plans to bring them back for a while.
As for zygons, he got a hmmmm and a nod.
As for moffs submitted bible, as it were, only a few have seen it.
Basically, what was reported sounds great but it didn't ring any bells with the powers that be.
Also 72lf has heard rumblings previously about the Ice Warriors.
Latest from 72lf is that SM take on these rumours was "B*ll*x "to most of it.

FILMING DATES:
The Co=Ordinator has heard (from an impeccable source) that filming will follow its usual pattern (so probably July 2009).
Filming will commence in "Autumn 2009" (so August? ;according to The Sun [18 Jul 08])

Format and scheduling

Moffat says he has fourteen episodes of Who to do. Since the special at Christmas 2009 will be an RTD special and Julie mentions a series return with thirteen episodes (Julie Gardner, Telegraph), the fourteenth episode is perhaps for Christmas 2010?

The current plan is for transmission to follow the pattern of series 1-4, according to Piers Wenger (The Co=Ordinator)

In the series 4 boxset commentaries, SM says that he prefers two-parters but that this will not affect how he approaches the series. (Den Of Geek). SM has also said that the current pattern of three two-parters was a good balance and it was hard to imagine straying too much from that (The Revolutionist, BAFTA Writers: Time Travel in TV Drama and Comedy Cardiff 6th Oct 2008)

There is word that the Hamlet production featuring David Tennant may move to New York (Gregory Doran, The Times)

The word from Steven Moffat ( Sunday Herald)

* "Moffat said he was preparing himself for the day Tennant decided to leave the show. He said: "When that dreadful day comes the audience will be ready for it."
* Moffat refused to say whether Tennant would leave the show in the 2010 series: "The reason the finale of the last series worked so well is that it was top secret." ..."

SM rules out an older Doctor if and when DT steps down "It might kill someone over 60 [...] I think I think he'll always probably tend to be around 40." (quotes from BBC Entertainment 23 Jul 2008)

Reports of DT's departure (note: this are completely unconfirmed): The News of the World (Aug '08 :specials are DT's last DW), The Scottish Sun (Aug '08: DT has "confirmed" he's quitting), The Mirror (Aug '08 : DT steps down after specials), jonahcohn: a foaf says DT is "definitely done" after the specials; animated cadavarDT will leave at the end of the specials; The Daily Star (30 Sept'08; reported by chrisakadonkey) says that the Master battles the Doctor in last 2009 special resulting in a new Doctor.

Reports of DT staying: "The Sun" (10 Sept 08 DT has agreed to stay if a film role is part of the deal") - confirmed by 72lf (detail in "Other Rumours"). Also confirmed by The Doctors trainers (entire fifth series and option on the movie, new Doctor for series 6), Eddie and
Lee Mansfield (who hints at DT staying post-series 5?). FULL HOUSE : The Co=Ordinator (DT for series 5). 72lf reports that DT is definitely on for S5, but there will be a new Doctor for series 6, (also here). Lee Mansfield reports DT as being keen to continue with no talk of him leaving at any time (see also here). Eddie agrees, he reports DT as feeling there is "no time limit". RTD (reported in theScottish Sunday Express 28 Sept'08) says, "David may never leave, he could go on for ever. I haven’t talked to him about leaving. Maybe it will never happen. Maybe he’ll be 70 and have to be taken off the set.” In the series 4 boxset commentaries, DT refers to Steven Moffat as his "new boss", with their discussions suggesting that they are working together ("Silence in the Library" commentary; Ron Mace and Den Of Geek)

IF DT is in the film he will be in series 6 (Eddie and Lee Mansfield).

RTD refuses to say whether Tennant will return for series 5; RTD says DT has made his decision and the BBC knows what it is (Guardian, July 2008). Julie Gardner says she doesn't know (Telegraph, July 2008)

DT is returning for series 5 (July 2008) - Mr Banana and The Doctor Trainers, via three separate sources

BBC are "more hopeful" that DT will stay for series 5. Apparently they want a deal by Autumn 2008. (The Sun [18 Jul 08])

In an interview with Mark Lawson RTD said that he "knows when David is leaving". However he then went on to say that he blatantly lies about the future of Doctor Who... (BBC4)

Conflicting rumours - some that DT has signed for series 5 (peteloaf; the-writer88); another that nothing has been officially signed (72lf)

There is also a rumour that the last special is being filmed with two endings to allow DT maximum time to consider his return (rocknrollbazza). (Note that filming of that special would be about four months before filming of the series).

A report suggests that Auntie Beeb is ready to flash the cash to persuade DT to stay The Scotsman

According to William Hill, Robert Carlyle is the most popular bet for next Doctor at 2/1. Also reported here.

The Companion

Female companion(Lee Mansfield) A Celtic companion. Non contemporary.Lee Mansfield Eddie agrees and adds that there will be no romantic interest with the Doctor (Eddie - see also here)

Oh and Celtic means Scottish, Irish or Welsh (Eddie)

Eddie reports that the companion will not have a one-series arc; they are keen for her to remain for series 6. This hinges on the Doctor-lite apparently.

72lf confirms that the companion is not for one series (he suggests she will be there to ease the transition to a new Doctor - but see section above).

The character name is Lucy (provisional name and subject to change) (Eddie)
It looks like she will be an Edwardian maid (Eddie), from Scotland (Eddie).

On his blog, Eddie suggests Annabel Reid is in the running for this part (reported by bomaya0).

Supporting Cast

This has since made the Sky TV website - Den of Geek point out that it references a Sun story which appears to have been pulled from their website.
(Many suggestions that Tom would be perfect for Professor Nightshade/Edmund Trevithick - see section above) - Eddie reports that Tom himself is unaware of any casting in the offing, but he is very keen and thinks it would be a great idea.

Other rumours
Major rumours about a DW film came out of Edinburgh (23 Aug 08) based it seems simply on this: Steven Moffat is quoted as saying this about a film, "As long as it was great and fantastic than yes, I'm not against the idea. But a film is on for 90 minutes and that is not as important as the series. But as long as it doesn't get in the way of the show we could do it." (quote from The Telegraph, variants in MSN Entertainment, The Press Association, BBC Entertainment)[/quote]

The Co=Ordinator says that IF there is a film it will star David Tennant and Billie Piper as set up during the finale in Journey's End (i.e. alt universe).

More "movie news" - The Sun (10 Sept'08) report a source as saying "It looks like the film is going to happen in the next few years." (See also Telegraph, Digital Spy, Teletext, My Park).

RTD was asked about a film (The Sun 9 Sept '08)- he allegedly said he'd love to see Catherine Zeta Jones as a Companion, but also that he had no time to "spit" let alone make a film (see also Western Mail, SiFy, OneIndia).

72lf said "todays snippets about Tennent apparently signing a deal to do s5 AND Who movie is true at this point. This will be part of a handshake deal and No official details will be revealed regarding movie details untill a script, budget and casting is finalised." Also confirmed by The Doctors trainers (entire fifth series and option on the movie). And The Co=Ordinator (2011 for the movie)

The Independent (13 Sept'08) report that speculation is growing that Hollywood is beckoning for DT. They also report, "BBC Film flatly denied it was seeking funding for a movie or that it had struck a deal with Tennant to star in the next series as long as the corporation committed to a big-screen version."

Digital Spy report that RTD might return to do a film, quoting RTD as saying, "I'd be very interested in going back for it. I think it could be lovely and could work as an idea. They did one in the 1960s and that worked and it didn't affect the TV series at all"

How would you say this series of SJA is different from the first?

"It comes in the dialogue. It's just more explanatory and it doesn't cut off quite so quickly. There are more grown-up stories and it's much harder hitting, I think. We stay with the problem this time, therefore we have to have dialogue that will not patronise."

Have you learnt more about Sarah Jane this series?

"I learn more about her every day. Russell [T Davies] said 'There are so many places she can go. We're only just starting to find out about her'. When the series started, I did think 'where is this going?' Quite honestly, when the pilot went out, I thought I was going to get so much stick from journalists. I love the programme, and always thought it was very good, but that's not always other people's perceptions. It's lovely how people have been so embracing of it."

How did you react when you were offered Sarah Jane Adventures?
"I went for a meal with Russell and Julie [Gardner, BBC Wales head of drama] and I actually thought I was going to be offered to go into Torchwood! Then I thought it was going to beK-9 and Sarah Jane, after what happened in 'School Reunion'. I loved K-9 to bits, but I wondered if that could work. They would have had to do something with the dog - they really would - because all you could do is crouch down and talk to it. That's very limiting, so I am blessed that I have the kids instead!"

How did you feel about The Brigadier coming back?

"I've seen Nick on and off over the years, but he was so pleased to be asked back. It's a lovely thing to do because he's spoken about doing it and it's really nice for the fans."

Did he expect to be asked back?

"I don't think he did. I think he thought his time had gone, because now there's a different UNIT in place."

Is it a reunion for the two characters on-screen?

"They kind of muzz over that a little, but it has been a long time, so that leaves it open to how long it's been. Sarah Jane doesn't really want to introduce the kids to UNIT, because they use guns. Sarah Jane doesn't think a gun is a good thing, not even as a last resort, so it must be pretty special to have to go to The Brig."

It's often rumoured, but do you think the Doctor could ever appear in SJA?
"Well, who would have thought Sarah Jane could have been working with Torchwood? I never thought that could happen! That's what was so amazing about the Doctor Who[finale]. The prospect of crossover between the programmes is quite incredible, so 'yes' in answer to your question, I don't see why you couldn't have the Doctor on this show."

Would you go back to Doctor Who again?

"I actually think that was the last time. But then again, I thought 'School Reunion' was the last time! I thought 'what a lovely send-off, thankyou so much', but now I think that actually might be the last time. I would be really happy if it ended there."

How do you feel about Russell leaving?

"I don't know if he's leaving us, though. I truly, truly don't know that. Steven [Moffat] is taking over Who, which will be really interesting. I am really looking forward to seeing what happens there."

Will there be a third series of Sarah Jane?

"It's in the offing. It depends on this [series] and there are a lot of ifs. I think they're planning it, and it would be lovely to see where we go next

I am not bak from England yet because there is no darn return flight but hopefully we will find one this Friday, I am writing this from a library and seeing as there isn't much news and Ihave only Ten minutes on the computer left I am going to copy and paste this from PLanet Gallifrey. So sorry PLanet Gallifrey but if you want me to delete the post then I will but I don't have any time to write all the catch up things so a huge thanks to Planet Gallifrey for this info.

2009 SPECIALS AND SERIES 5

Filming Schedule:Filming has wrapped for the 2008 Christmas special. Filming for the 2009 specials will commence in January 2009 (Tennant will begin filming on the 9th Jan) with the filming for series 5 starting later that Spring. The Christmas Special for 2008 has already been filmed. In 2009 there will be either three or four hour-long specials, one of which will broadcast at Easter and another of which will broadcast on Christmas 2009. Two will be written by RTD, and the rest will be co-written by him.

And as for how many specials there are:
Three specials were mentioned in the original press release. DT confirmed four on the Andrew Marr show. DWM 397 also confirmed four specials for 2009. The Guardian said there were five in total. The latest information from Julie Gardner mentions four specials (including Christmas 2008) then mentions DT coming back to film them.

Speculation:One of the Specials may be taking place partially or entirely in a location outside the UK.For the Christmas Special:Many have speculated this is based on the audio "The One Doctor" - according to "very good, close sources", this episode is indeed based on that audio, and is a light comedy after the tearjerker of the finale. DM is the fake Doctor, and the Cybershades are fakes made by Morrissey's character, only for the real Cybermen (and the real Doctor) to show up...Casting

McGann rumoured to return in the second 2009 special, in an episode directed by Graham Harper (heard by a few people but apparently the "latest sources" say this is not happening)

SERIES 5
RTD is leaving and Moffat taking over for series 5. It'll be back to the original 13 episodes format. As for writers of the episodes, there are rumours abound that Neil Gaiman and Rob Shearman may be writing episodes for series 5. When asked what he knew about the rumour Rob Shearman replied "Only that it's news to me!"Gaiman says on his blog that Gaiman HAS had dinner with the Moff but "if it ever gets to the point where I know that I'm actually, definitely, for certain, writing an episode of Doctor Who, I'll post it here. In big red letters. Or green. You'll know when it happens, trust me."According to DWM, apparently "THEY'RE BACK". Although we don't actually know what or who "They" are. RTD refuses to say whether Tennant will return for series 5. RTD says he "knows when David is leaving..." DT has made his decision and the BBC knows what it is. He then went on to say that he blatantly lies about the future of Doctor Who....According to the Sun, DT will leave after the four specials "and a movie"A rumour from "a fairly good source" says that Andy Pryor has cast DT's replacement. There was a short list of names - including one woman. The rumour also suggested DT would not be in all specials...There is also a rumour that the last special is being filmed with two endings to allow DT maximum time to consider his return (they did this for Parting of the Ways as well)

S04E11: 'Turn Left'

It's The Doctor's turn to take a break this week, as Donna takes centre stage in the distinctly hit and miss 'Turn Left'. Billie Piper is back, but very conspicuously struggles to nail Rose Tyler's chavette dialect and sounds like a female Chris Eubank. The plot meanders for a fair while, exploring a sci-fi spin on the butterfly effect.

Fortunately, the story soon veers off in a deliciously dark direction towards the end and whips up the excitement for the impending finale. The true mastermind of the ill fate that happens to Donna in this episode will be familiar to fans of one of the Doctor Who spinoff shows.

Donna suggests that footage of a Titanic replica spaceship flying towards Buckingham Palace is actually from a sequel to the famous Leonardo DiCaprio/Kate Winslet film.

There's a Wayne's World moment where Donna and Wilf sing Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.

Rose Tyler tells Donna that The Darkness is coming. Donna tells her that she saw them live in 2004 and they only had one good song.

If you thought that Doctor Who couldn't get much darker of scarier this series, think again. Midnight is one of the most intense and disturbing stories we've seen so far.

It all starts off happily enough with the Doctor and Donna on the holiday planet of Midnight.

What's going on here?

Donna just wants to sunbathe, so the Doctor goes off by himself on a sight seeing trip with a group of strangers. And that's when the trouble really starts.

This is one of those stories where the less you know before watching it, the more you'll enjoy it.

Without giving too much away, writer Russell T Davies takes a beautifully simple concept and turns it into something filled with menace and terror.

It's a story that looks at different parts of the Doctor's personality, especially his never ending curiosity, while at the same time showing the risks and danger that that brings.

Claustrophobic feeling

And it also highlights, with Donna not around for most of the story, how important his companion is to him. But the most terrifying part is how it explores how human beings respond when they're under intense pressure.

Midnight looks to be exciting!

It's great to see how Doctor Who doesn't always need lots of special effects and huge sets to succeed. This episode is mostly set in one room, which gives it a wonderfully claustrophobic feel.

And thanks to a brilliantly intense performance from David Tennant, this is an episode that's well up there with the programme's very best.

Steven Moffat who wrote some fantastic Doctor Who episodes (The Empty Child 2-parter, Girl in the Fireplace,Blink and the upcoming Silence in the library 2-parter) will be taking over Doctor Who for Series 5, he had this to say:

"My entire career has been a Secret Plan to get this job," Moffat continued. "I applied before but I got knocked back 'cos the BBC wanted someone else. Also I was seven.

"Anyway, I'm glad the BBC has finally seen the light, and it's a huge honour to be following Russell into the best - and the toughest - job in television."

And Russell T Davies commented saying :
"It's been a delight and an honour working with Steven, and I can't wait to see where his extraordinary imagination takes the Doctor. Best of all, I get to be a viewer again, watching on a Saturday night!"

I think this is great news as I have loved every one of Stevens episodes.

Here is Lizo's review of The Unicorn And The Wasp

Gosh, we're already more than halfway through the series. Doesn't time fly when you're having fun? And fun is definitely what this episode is.

After landing in the 1920s, The Doctor and Donna are quickly drawn into sinister goings on at a country house.

People are being killed off one by one - just like they are in the mystery stories by the famous author Agatha Christie, who also happens to be a guest.

There's a giant wasp somehow involved too.

So The Doctor and Donna team up with Agatha Christie to try and solve the mystery, and find the murderer.

Lots of fun

It must be said, the plot of this episode does get a bit overcomplicated towards the end, but you don't really care because you're laughing so much.

This is by far the funniest story so far this series. David Tennant is on great form, helped along by a script that delivers a gag a minute.

And of course Catherine Tate, who's got a strong comedy background, gives a perfect performance too.

So with things looking like they could be getting much darker over the second half of the series, this is just what Doctor Who needs - a story that's sure to put a huge grin on your face for 45 minutes.

Sounds great doesn't it and it is written by Steven Moffat who wrote The Empty Child, The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the fireplace and last seasons episode, Blink.
In my opinion all these episodes were the highlighs of each season and so I can't wait for his two-parter this year.

Here is Lizo's review of The Doctors Daughter, he gives it a 3/5

At the end of the last episode the Tardis doors slammed shut and it hurtled off taking The Doctor, Donna and Martha with it.

The Doctor and his daughter
And when it lands on a distant planet things go from bad to worse as they end up in the middle of a bitter war between two groups.

Martha is captured by one group, aliens called the Hath. The other group, who are human, want The Doctor and Donna's help in continuing their war.

And that's when The Doctor comes face to face with his daughter.

Family ties

Georgia Moffett is superb as Jenny, The Doctor's daughter. Like him, she has astonishing abilities.

And she challenges him at every turn, making him think about things that he's never considered before. And as the story goes on, they continue to learn from each other.

Hath soldiers
This episode also picks up the anti war theme of the previous Sontaran stories, with The Doctor trying to stop the violence between the Hath and the humans, as well as trying to explore what actually makes a person a person.

It tries to cram an enormous amount into 45 minutes. And, in a way, that's its biggest problem.

Jam-packed action

There are so many interesting ideas, things that the series hasn't really tried before, that most of them don't get the attention they deserve.

As a result, you don't really end up caring about either the human fighters or the aliens. Or who's right or wrong. Which means there's never a strong sense of danger or menace.

Martha
There are some wonderful scenes with The Doctor trying to come to terms with fatherhood, and yet again Catherine Tate is fabulous; always forcing him to confront things that he'd rather not.

But Martha's story in this episode works less well. Since she's returned, she's hardly spent any time with the Time Lord. And that, in turn, makes her goodbye at the end of the story much less emotional than it should be.

This is still a terrifically ambitious episode, but one which never quite manages to live up to its potential.

It's a case of cracking premise, lacklustre execution in this excursion to the planet Messaline. The Doctor is joined by both Donna and Martha as he is confronted with a serious case of "dad shock" after encountering a young blonde lady called Jenny. We'll spare you a full on rant about the disappointing quality of the episode (check out the full review on Digital Spy immediately after the episode has aired) and instead serve up a few spoilers (and two false spoilers)...

Here is Lizo from Newsround weekly review of Doctor Who, I would also like to congratulate Lizo on getting promoted but I hope he still writes his wonderful reviews, here is the one for The Poison Sky:

It's not looking good. The skies over the world are filling with toxic gas, the evil Martha clone is helping to put the Sontarans' plan into operation, and the Doctor can't work out what the aliens are really up to.

Can Donna stop the Sontarans?There's only one person who can save the day. But is Donna up to it?
The second half of this two-part adventure rattles along at great pace. And is pretty much action packed from start to finish.
Better still, after helping the Doctor over the last few episodes Donna gets the chance to see if she can do things on her own.
Violence
The Doctor's got big problems too, in this episode. Not only is he trying to stop the war-like Sontarans, but he's also doing his best to hold UNIT back from launching what could be a disastrous attack on the aliens.

The Doctor's got BIG problemsThis story's anti-war message works well, with the Doctor leading by example as he demonstrates that violence should only ever be used when there's absolutely no alternative.
But it's not all grim fighting, there are some lovely moments of humour, especially for fans who've been watching the series since it came back three years ago.
Deadly opponents
Some two-part stories promise much in the first-half, but fail to deliver in the second. But the concluding part of this adventure is one that doesn't disappoint.
It's simply a great story, with the Doctor once more taking on deadly opponents armed only with his wits.
And you know that that means the Sontarans don't stand a chance!

After bidding goodbye to her family yet again, Donna is ushered into the TARDIS by the Doctor for safe-keeping until the storm blows over. Unfortunately, she's not got her feet up for long, as the Sontarans - aided by Martha's clone buddies - teleport the TARDIS to their ship above the Earth.

The clue's in the name.
As the fumes from Atmos engulf the planet, the nations of the world unite to launch a nuclear strike against the Sontaran ship. The Doctor knows that the nuclear missles will have no impact, but his pleas to stop the strike fall on deaf ears. Expect lots of shouting from Mr Tennant this episode, by the way - he's scary when he's impassioned! The Doctor also realises that the gas is being used by the Sontarans for a secondary purpose - but what exactly are they planning for the Earth?

Freema? Think again
When all is done, Martha Jones is ready to go home to her waiting fiancé. But in a surprise twist, she is not allowed to. Physically not allowed to. Three's a crowd, eh?p

The BBC realesed the new sypnosis for the Sontaran Strategem...so here it is:

Martha Jones summons the Doctor back to modern-day Earth, but with the mysterious ATMOS devices spreading across the world, Donna discovers that even her own family is not safe from the alien threat. Is it too late to save them?

And next on Wikipedia this was said but as wikipedia is known to be unreliable just treat it like rumours:

Having covertly established a base at the mysterious ATMOS Factory aided by the Rattigan Academy, the Sontarans unleash a potent terror which brings the world to its knees.

Cyber christmas

On the Doctor Who Forums pictures have coem about showing a Cyberman in filming the Christmas special which brings confirmation that they will be in the Christmas special so I would like to thank Scooty of DWF for the picture and set report:
Right, lets have a full report from Scooty

I arrived at the cemetary around 1pm today and was confronted with an awesome sight, Cybermen! 8 New series style Cybermen were walking marching through the graveyard covered in snow and mist. They look identical to how they did in Rise of the Cybermen and Doomsday. The Cybus logo is present and correct. Right from the moment I got there, the security said that no photographs were to be taken at all and they spent most of their day telling people off for doing it. I respected this and thus the only photos I took today were of a Cybermen posing for a photograph and some Victorian people dashing about (no more than what was seen and photographed yesterday).

As for the scenes being filmed:

1. The Cybermen march through the graveyard. Victorian people run away scared and a number of them get deleted in the usual neck grasp style.
2. Now this is the unusual bit - 3 actors, dressed in feathery cloaks (like Ringwraiths) are wearing Cybermen heads. But not just any heads. Bronze or rusty heads. With a different handle-bar design. The handle bars are more of a diamond shape around the head. It's difficult to explain the design without photos. They also have bronze coloured hands. These three creatures run around the graveyard, staying close to the floor killing people. The Cybermen who are marching through, take no notice of them. Are they working together??
3. One of these creatures - who I swear one of the crew called "Cyber Wraiths" (but don't hold me to that) - jumps off a trampoline onto one of the Victorians and kills him.

There was no dialogue to be heard, today was action filming all the way. Hope this report makes up for the lack of photos - I assume we will be getting a BBC photo release very soon.

The Fires Of Pompeii
This week Doctor and The Donna land in AD79 (only 52 years after Jack's burial, eh?) in Pompeii, the day before the big blowout. The Doctor is keen to scarper straight away - although needless to say, events conspire against him - while Donna is determined that the pair do something to save the clueless townsfolk. There are guest stars aplenty in this episode, including Peter Capaldi (last seen as Sid's dead dad in Skins), Phil Davis and Tracey Childs.

The Sisterhood
This is Doctor Who, so it's not just as simple as a volcano blowing its top. The supernatural-tinged mystery involves a group of ladies known as the Sisterhood - no relation to those feline creatures from previous series - who have the ability to tell future events. For example, they know who the Doctor and Donna are, and they seem to know a bit about what's in store for them both too. As a cunning means of identification, members of the Sisterhood draw eyes on the backs of their hands then hold them up in front of their faces as if to represent ACTUAL eyes (see right). Genius, no?

Rose Again
There's no sign of Rose in this episode - but then again, there was no sign of her in the original cut of episode one provided to us press people, either. My guess is we'll see several more Rose cameos over the course of the series in the buildup to her return proper (episodes 11 to 13) but probably not again for a few weeks.

Here is the newsround review of the second episode which sounds great:

The Doctor and Donna accidentally land in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. And their timing couldn't have been worse.

It's the day before a huge volcano is due to erupt and bury the city killing everybody there.

The Doctor just wants to leave, but Donna thinks he should try and save the city. And that's when things take an even more mysterious turn.

Big row

People living in Pompeii are talking about a prophecy involving a blue box, and some even seem to know exactly who The Doctor and Donna are.

This is an episode that's everything an episode of Doctor Who should be.

The Doctor and Donna have a huge row!

Not only is there a baffling mystery to be solved, but there's amazing tension because a huge argument is brewing between The Doctor and Donna about whether they should leave or not.

Each of them is convinced they're doing the right thing.

Tantalising hints

That alone would make this a standout episode, but there are also some of the best special effects yet seen on the show.

As well as a few more tantalising hints about what might be coming later in the series.

All in all, one of the very best episodes the show has produced.

Five out of five.

Digital Spy have released some rumours about the Fires of Pompeii but these should only be taken as rumours...here the article is:

"We're positively erupting with teasery hints about what lies in store for The Doctor and Donna when they turn up in Pompeii 79AD. Here are several clues about the content of their adventure, some cryptic, others fairly blunt. As an added bonus, we've chucked in three red herrings into the lava this week for you to fish out.

The Tardis is sold, but without The Doctor's consent.

The Doctor reveals himself as a Fawlty Towers fan with a quip he makes about Donna.

The time travelling pair are already known to some inhabitants of Pompeii.

An escape pod is used at some stage.

Also just thought I would add that the rumours on the forums are that Donna is controlled by the Master all through the 4th series though I doubt this is true , also Deathray magazine published an article naming all the companions in the series 4 finale and it included Ianto and Gwen from Torchwood but this should be taken with a pinch of salt as the saying goes!!!

Little Monsters?

The adipose are something a little different: they’re small and cute, says Will Cohen at the visual effects company The Mill, who were responsible for bring the creatures to life. Adipose means “Fat”, which hints at there origins. “There soft, pliable, rubbery and fat like,” says Cohen, “and slightly different”

Russell T Davies wanted crowds of them for the new series opener Partners In Crime. Who are you going to call? Oscar winning Stephen Regelous, creator of massive software, which conjured up the vast battles in the Lord of the Rings films, that’s who. Trouble is, he lives in New Zealand. But, adds Cohen, as Regelous is a huge Who fan, he said “If we ever needed to do a crowd for doctor who, he’d come here and work for us” And he did. The Image at the side shows and adipose and the instructions that govern its movement on massive software. “We made two versions of the adipose: background extras, which have artificial intelligence and can move independently; and “hero” ones in the foreground which the Mill animated.”

The Mill love them and Cohen sees extra potential: “Someone made a stress-busting toy out of them. I have one at my desk at the moment!”

The Reunion

Catherine, Were you surprised to be asked to rejoin the doctor for a full season as Donna Noble?

CT: I couldn’t have been more surprised. I went to lunch with [executive producer] Julie Gardener and I thought we were just there to chat. When people say, “My jaw hit the floor,” I know what they mean! I made my decision as soon as they suggested it – it just took a while to work out the logistics.

How are Donna and the Doctor reunited?

DT: That’s part of the joy of the first episode, seeing how they meet again. It’s as much about that as it’s about the alien goings on. If you were looking for the doctor, where would you go? What sort of thing would you look for?

What Changed her Mind?

DT: Ooh, her boyfriend being eaten by a giant spider. That king of thing.

CT: She thought she’d try something new.

How does he take to seeing her again? Donna was a bit of a handful last time around

DT: He’s pretty gobsmacked. But I think he feels that he didn’t treat Martha as fairly as he might have done, so at first he’s slightly reluctant to involve anyone else in his life. But Donna’s quite a force of nature, so she doesn’t take no for an answer.

The Relationship

How do they get on together?

CT: Its different from the previous companions, because she doesn’t have the romantic attachment [as Rose or Martha] to the doctor

DT: You’ll recognise the relationship from The Runaway Bride, but it’s less abrasive, because now Donna wants to be a part of the TARDIS’s life.

CT: In fact, during The Runaway Bride all she wanted was to do was get away from him; as it turns out, all she wants to do is be with him

Is Donna as mouthy as before?

CT: Everyone assumed she was a one off – myself included – but now she has a whole season to have a story arc. So none of the feistiness has been lost, but you also tap into a different side of her – a much more vulnerable side. She experiences all the things she sees in a very human way. So there are episodes where she lands on an alien planet, sees and alien and says “Oh My God!”

DT: She kept her feet on the ground a bit. She probably challenges him a bit more. The Doctor had a slight tendency to be a little……

CT: Pompous?

DT: Pompous! [Laughs] But she cuts through all of that.

Does Donna bring out a different side in The Doctor?

DT: I think they’re good for each other. They’re good at limiting each other’s less appealing excesses. There is an equality. It’s now quite teacher and pupil, which in a sense The Doctor and Martha and The Doctor and Rose were. There’s and ease with each other

Does Donna change though out the series

CT: She has a fantastic story arc. Donna feels that he hasn’t done anything with her life and suddenly she’s having incredible adventures – and she’s not unmoved by them. She was at the beginning, but you couldn’t have had a series of someone going “Get away from me! Shut Up”

DT: You see a huge range. There’s a funny, quite banter-y stuff and a lot of surprisingly emotional stuff.

CT: They really rounded Donna out from being a shouting fishwife to some one who’s quite vulnerable and emotional.

Does she provide a greater potential for comedy?

CT: Since they’re more like equals, the one-liners are more shared out. I used to get all the best lines! I think Russell’s really enjoyed righting that dynamic, and its certainly great fun to play.
